Course Descripti= on: This course is intended as a survey that deals w= ith the selection, evaluation, and utilization of literary materials for childr= en from pre-school through middle school age.=   It is expected that students read literary selections for children in this age range. 

 

Course Objectives: <= /h4>

<= ![if !supportLists]>1.   &n= bsp;  To identif= y and understand the values of using literature with children.<= /p>

<= ![if !supportLists]>2.   &n= bsp;  To evaluate multicultural literature and develop ESOL strategies for using this literature.

<= ![if !supportLists]>3.   &n= bsp;  To identif= y, select, and evaluate the various literary genre/types found within fiction = and nonfiction and within prose and poetry written for elementary/middle school= teachers.

<= ![if !supportLists]>4.   &n= bsp;  To study t= he following genres: children’s classics, folk/fairy tales, myths, balla= ds, fables, nursery rhymes, fiction, fantasy, contemporary realistic fiction, biography, informational books, poetry, and picture books.

<= ![if !supportLists]>5.   &n= bsp;  To identif= y the contributions of notable authors, illustrators and poets to literature.


Course Requirements: The course= is based on two elements: essays and activities. This course is applicable to teachers in elementary and middle schools.

Format of the essays and activities: Each activity and essay must be a minimum of 100 words.  Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. 

 

Scoring CEUs

1 point per activity or essay; 10 points =3D 1 CEU

Completing ten chapters =3D 5 CEUs; Completing all twelve = chapters =3D 6 CEUs.

When you have completed the CEU requirements, contact Dr. Morris who will make application for your CEU certificate.  When emailing your instructor, be = sure to include your full name, school district, school, and your mailing address.  Your certificate wil= l be issued and mailed to you.
