Cross-Age Tutoring Theme: COURAGE

Literature: “Stone Fox” John Gardner
Genre: Realistic Fiction

Grade 2 Objective: Discover facts about the Indian culture and dogsledding.
Grade 4 Objective: Dealing with money.

Activities:
1) Grow potatoes; Discuss crops around the world and different climates.
2) Visit a farm and look at farm machinery.
3) Set up a classroom bank with student accounts, loan department, checkbooks.
4) Apply for a loan- See how much the pay off would be with interest.
5) Team report on the state of Wyoming.
6) “What would you do with $500?” - Make a collage of things in magazines.
7) Build dogsleds using cardboard boxes - Have student “dogsled” teams race each other.
8) Research - Dogsledding.
9) Re-enact the play.
10) Living museum - Turn the classroom into the book - “Stone Fox”

Grade 2 Assessment: Oral exams on selected topics.
Grade 4 Assessment: Written reports on Pioneers and the West.
