Grade Level: 4th – 5th
Objective: The students will discover potential career paths and create PowerPoint presentations to highlight aspects of th= eir chosen professions.
Description: This lesson allows students to bra= instorm and explore career goals and various fields and professions; and through the presentation requirement, students will become familiar with Microsoft PowerPoint and master many of its features.
*Technology Activities/Procedures:
The teacher will encourage students to brainstorm, foc= us on careers that interest them, and use a graphic organizer/web to organize the= ir thoughts.
* With the use of laptops and Internet access, the tea= cher will instruct students to visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s websit= e at www.dol.gov, investigate their chosen careers, and collect the following information about their chosen careers:<= /p>
* The teacher will assign students dates for students = to present. The students will ut= ilize a Smartboard during their “My Future Career” class presentation= s.
After all students have presented, the teacher will in= struct students to describe in their journals the importance of making career goals and planning for their futures.
“L= ost Pets”

Objective: The students will create flyers feat= uring their lost pets.
Description: This lesson allows students to
comprehend to a greater extent the story “The Hot & Cold
Summer,” which features a young girl
*Technology Activities/Procedures:
After reading “The Hot & Cold Summer,”=

teacher will prompt a class discussion about the particular event in the pl=
ot

The teacher will encourage students to describe their = pets, imagine how they would feel if their pets were lost, and suggest solutions = for finding their pets; for example, a solution would be to create flyers and p= ost them.
The teacher will inform students that they are going to create flyers featuring their pets while imagining that their pets are lost= and hoping they will be found.
* The teacher will instruct students to take out the pictures of their pets. (The teacher will tell students 1 – 2 weeks p= rior to the lesson that they will need a picture of one of their pets.). The teacher will allow students to= scan their pet pictures and save them on the class computers.
* The teacher will assign groups of students to work o= n the class computers to create their flyers.&nb= sp; The teacher will instruct students to utilize Microsoft Word to crea= te their flyers. The teacher will explain the features of Microsoft Word and inform students that their flyers should include 3 different fonts, 3 different text colors, and the saved pi= cture of their pets.
* After all flyers have been created, the teacher will introduce students to the website www= .petfinder.com, where students can search adoptable pets; locate shelters and rescue groups; sign up to be a volunteer; etc, and allow them to browse through the site u= sing laptops.
“A= utobiographies”

Grade Level: 4th – 5th
Objective: The students will compose autobiogra= phies and will incorporate digital pictures.
Description: The lesson allows students to impr= ove and enhance their writing skills and their understanding of the autobiograp= hy genre while familiarizing themselves with digital cameras (This lesson will require several class periods to complete all processes.).
*Technology Activities/Procedures:
The teacher will explain to the class what an autobiog= raphy is and discuss the difference between an autobiography and a biography.
The teacher will inform the students that they will wr= ite an autobiography, which will include their portraits.
* The teacher will begin the lesson by demonstrating t= he functions of a digital camera. After students seem to have an understanding of the features and functions, the class will use two digital cameras to take pictures of fellow classmates. (The teacher will choose two students who are familiar with digital cameras to begin the process. Each student will ha= ve an opportunity to photograph another student.) In assigned groups the students wi= ll download their pictures into a Microsoft Word document at the computer stations and = save their documents/files.
* The teacher will inform students that they will begin their biographies by describing themselves – age, grade, family life, hobbies, interests, etc. Afte= r the students have typed a few sentences, they will utilize the “Text Wrap= ping” feature, which will allow them to drag and situate their downloaded picture= s in the text.
* The teacher will instruct students to take out their= baby pictures. (The teacher will inform students 1 – 2 weeks prior to this lesson that baby pictures will be needed.)= The teacher will demonstrate to students in groups how to use the scanner to scan their baby pictures and save the images while other groups = are completing the rough drafts of their autobiographies on paper. After the pictures have been scann= ed, the students will insert the baby pictures into their documents and can continue typing their stories.
After all autobiographies are complete and have been e= dited, they will be printed and compiled to create a class autobiography booklet.<= /p>
“S= olar System”

Grade Level: 4th – 5th
Objective: The students will explore the solar system, investigate particular planets, and use technologically created charts/tables to highlight the planets’ features.
Description: The lesson will enhance the students’ knowledge of the aspects of our solar system and will requi= re them to utilize the Internet and Microsoft Word to accomplish the lesson’s tasks. This le= sson can be easily manipulated and will allow for all subjects/disciplines to be integrated. (This lesson may require two class periods.)
*Technology Activities/Procedures:
The teacher will inform students that they will begin a study of the solar system.
* The teacher will introduce the lesson and the topic = of study through a multimedia adventure of the solar system at www.bbc.co.uk/scie= nce/space/solarsystem/. The students will be able to explo= re the solar system site independently with laptops.
* The teacher will assign groups of students (3 or 4) = one planet to focus their study on and inform students that they are to obtain = the following information about their planet: size (diameter), composition, distance from sun, time in history of discovery, and an interesting/unique = feature. The teacher will give students tim= e with laptops to research their planets at www.nineplanets.org/overv= iew.html. Time will also be given to student= s in their groups to utilize encyclopedias, science textbooks, other expository texts, etc. to gather the required information and compile it.
* As groups complete their research, the teacher will =
direct
them to the computer stations where they will open a Microsoft Word
document. The teacher will
demonstrate to the groups how to create/insert a table into the document.
* After all groups have compiled their information and created tables, the groups will present their findings and display their ta= bles using an overhead projector. = While groups are presenting, the students in the audience will be taking notes ab= out the other planets so that at a later date they will create another chart/ta= ble that includes all information on all planets, not just the one planet they researched.
“W= eather Forecasts”

Grade Level: 4th – 5th
Objective: The students will compare and contra= st daily weather forecasts and produce/predict their own forecasts and present them on video.
Description: This lesson will require students = to attain a variety of weather forecasts to compare and contrast them and allow them to predict upcoming weather. Prior to this activity, students will have some background knowledge= of how the clouds, wind direction, barometric pressure, indicate the upcoming weather patterns. To conclude= the lesson, students will video each other acting as meteorologists presenting = the weather on “JEJE Daily News.”
*Technology Activities/Procedures:
* The teacher will instruct students to visit sites su= ch as www.weather.com and www.wdam.com using laptops. The students will compare and cont= rast 5-day forecasts for their areas.
* The teacher will assign groups of students to make predictions about weather patterns for the upcoming week using their prior knowledge and the information gained from the websites. The students will be assigned days= in which they will forecast the weather on “JEJE Daily News.” Students not forecasting the weath= er will participate in the video recording process.
* After all students have had an opportunity to record= and be recorded, the teacher will allow the students to utilize the TV and VCR = to display the daily forecasts.
