Procedures:=

As a class…

1.      The teacher will lead a short lecture covering section 3-4 (pages 102-105). 

 

Students will divide into cooperative teams…

2.      In teams, students wil= l read and discuss textbook pages 102-105.  As they read and discuss, students will complete a Study Team Review Sheet.

3.      After all teams have completed the Study Team Review Sheet, students will be asked to share what they have learned.

4.      During the last five m= inutes of class, students will complete an exit card (individually) to demonstrate what they learned.

 

Technology Activities:=

  1. Students will res= pond to lecture questions through the use of the Classroom Performance Syst= em (CPS).  This method allow= s the teacher to automatically identify weaknesses before ending the lessons= .
  2. The teacher will utilize the overhead graphing calculator to demonstrate how to find me= an, median, and mode with the TI-83.
  3. Students will use= the Inspiration Software to create graphic organizers about the textbook p= ages discussed.

Can You Guess?

Objectives:=      = The students will find the mean of a set of data.

        &= nbsp;                The students will use data to make predictions.

Procedure:<= /span>

1.      Divide the class into 3-person teams.

2.      Draw a number line on = the chalkboard with a scale from 0-30.

3.      Give each group a smal= l cup of water, 2 pipettes, a penny, a nickel, a dime, paper towel, and 3 post-it notes.

4.      Each team tries to see= how many drops of water they can get to stay on the head of a dime.  Write the results on a post-it note.  Post the results on the chalkboard above the appropriate place on the number line.  Find the mean of the results.  Post the mean on the board. 

5.      Use the information on= the board to predict how many drops of water will fit on the head of a penny.  Record each team’s predictio= ns.

6.      Each team then tries t= o see how many drops of water they can get to stay on the head of the penny.

7.      Post the results and f= ind the mean.  If your prediction = was within 5 drops of the mean, your team gets to stay in the game.<= /span>

8.      Repeat using the nickel.  Continue predicting a= nd testing using different coins.  The team left at the end of the game wins.

 

 

Technology Activities:=

1)      Use a DVD camcorder to record an example of how to complete the experiment.  Play= the DVD for the class to illustrate the best way = to conduct the experiment.

2)      In place of a chalkboa= rd, post results on a Smart Board and print a copy of the line plots for each student using a laser printer.

3)      For reinforcement, have students practice finding the mean, median, and mode using a graphing calculator (TI 83).

Are You Average?

Procedure:<= /span>

Work together as a class.

1.      List at least ten ques= tions you would like to ask to help you describe what the “average” student is like.

For example:&nbs= p;   What is your height in inches?

  &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;        How old are you?

  &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;        How many brothers and sisters do you have?

  &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;        What is your favorite TV show?

  &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;        What is your favorite hobby?

2.      Prepare a survey with = your ten questions.  Each student i= n the class should complete the survey.

Work in-groups of thre= e.

3.      Each group should take= one of the questions and compile the data in a frequency table or on a line plo= t.

4.      Find the mean, median,= mode, and range of the data for your team’s selected question. Decide which= one best describes your set of data and justify your choice.<= /p>

5.      Compile and discuss the results. 

6.      Each group will then m= ake a poster that describes the “average” student in the classroom.

 

Technology Activities:=

  1. Allow students to= use a digital camera to take pictures of items for the “average poster (item 6). 
  2. Instead of creati= ng a poster, students would utilize the state of the art computer lab to cr= eate PowerPoint presentations of their definition of average.
  3. Students will post their final projects on the class web page for parents and others to v= iew.

 

 

 

Pairs Check

Procedures:=

After a short review s= ession guided by the teacher…

1.      Students will divide i= nto their cooperative teams.

2.      Each four-person team = will then split into two teams of two.

3.      Students will complete= their assigned class work using the pairs-check method.

a)&n= bsp;     The first student will complete question 1 while th= eir partner watches and helps (coach).

b)&n= bsp;     The coach will then check the work completed by the= ir partner.

c)&n= bsp;     After the partners agree that the answer is correct, the coach praises their partner.

d)&n= bsp;     The roles of the pair now switch and the second question is completed following steps a-c.

e)&n= bsp;     After the pair has completed the first two question= s on the pairs check worksheet, the team reunites and pairs compare answers.  Pairs check their work and questio= n the teacher if necessary.

f)&n= bsp;       When the team agrees on the answer to the first two problems, the team splits back into pairs and repeats the process.

g)&n= bsp;     The steps are repeated until all questions on the p= age have been answered and checked.

h)&n= bsp;     If pairs do not finish, the worksheet is cut in half and completed individually as homework.

 

Technology Activities:=

  1. Before beginning = the lesson, students will watch a short United Streaming digital video abo= ut the measures of central tendency.&nbs= p; The digital video will be paused at certain intervals to allow students to work out the example problems on the Smart Board.
  2. The teacher will = review the answers to the Pairs Check worksheet with the aid of an overhead projector.

Procedures:=

Together as a class…

1.      Before students grab handfuls of popcorn, challenge each to guess how many kernels they hold.  Students will write their predicti= ons down on a post-it note labeled PREDICTION.

2.      Each student should gr= ab a handful of popped popcorn. (The popcorn can be placed on a paper towel to k= eep it off the desk.)

3.      Now have students esti= mate how many kernels of popcorn they have picked up.  Record the estimation on a post-it labeled ESTIMATION.

4.      Each student will coun= t the number of popped kernels in their handful and record the information along = with their name on a post-it note labeled ACTUAL AMOUNT.

5.      The teacher will draw = a line plot on the chalkboard.  Each student will then place his or her post-it note in the appropriate location= on the line plot.

 

In cooperative teams…

6.      Each team will choose = on of the following ways to represent the data: frequency table, bar graph, stem-and-leaf plot, circle graph, or box-and-whisker plot. 

7.      Each team will find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data.

8.      Each member of the tea= m will be given questions to answer regarding the work that was completed by the group.

9.      Teams will present and explain their graphical representations to the class.

 

Technology Activities:=

  1. Data will be collected by each student and recorded.  The data will = then be compiled by each group using Excel spreadsheet.
  2. Students will use the Graph Master software= to create their graphs.
  3. Students may use simple five function calcu= lators to aid with this activity.  Special needs students will use a talking five function calcula= tor with earphones.
