Learning the Rules and Procedures

Grade Level: 6-8

Objective: Students will understand and recall the rul= es and procedures of the classroom.

Description: Students will be taught the rules and procedures in class the day before. They will have copied them in their notebooks. The class will be divided into gro= ups of three or four. Each group wil= l be assigned two of the rules. Th= ey will have to act out the rules they are responsible for and take a picture = of this with the digital camera. The teacher will download the pictures and save them to a website. The students (in groups from yeste= rday) will access the website the next day from their laptops. They will cut and paste the pictur= es from the web and make a slideshow. The students will save their power point to a jump drive. The teacher will combine the shows and run them during the bell activity.

Technology Activities:

To reinforce adding rational numbers by use of the calculator

Description: Students will add rational numbers by using pencil and paper first.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> They will get a common denominator= , and then add the numerators keeping the denominator. They will then use the TI-83 graph= ing calculators to check their problems. They will enter each fraction by placing parentheses around them and= by using the division key for the fraction bar. They will press enter when finished. The answer is a decimal. To turn the answer t= o a fraction, they will press the MATH key and ENTER twice. The answer is now a fraction. To practice fractions, students wi= ll go to Math.com. They will follow= the links to the fraction practice. They will work for 15 minutes on the website. They will copy and paste one of the pages to a word document and print the page to turn in.

Technology:
1. Students will be grouped in pairs.&= nbsp; Each group will be given a mathematician to research. The group will go to Google and se= arch their mathematician. They wil= l copy and paste a picture of the mathematician onto a power point slide. They will then fill three other sl= ides with information about the mathematician.&= nbsp; They will use one last slide to site their reference. Students will save their slides to= a jump drive and present them on the smart boards.
  
  Technology Activity:
  1. They will co= unt all of the M&M’s and record the number. They will also count each individu= al color and record their findings. After the students have had five to ten minutes to count and record,= the teacher will instruct them to make ratios or fractions comparing the M&M data. During this time, the t= eacher may choose to get the students to represent some of the fractions with a picture of their M&M’s. The teacher will also point out improper fractions and recall how to change them to mixed numbers.
    The next day the students will make a video showing how they would teach the M&M activity to a lower grade. The students will review their video and critique their teaching ability. Once the students ar= e sure of their roles in the video and how they will teach the lesson. Video conferencing systems will be= set up in the classroom and in a lower grade classroom. The students will teach the lower = grade class the M&M activity.
    
    Technology Activity:
    1. To create a mental picture of how adding and subtracting integers works
      
      Description: Students will practice adding and subtracting integers. We will take red and yellow tiles = to represent the problems visually. Students will make zero pairs to find the answer to the problem. After a few examples are shown, the students will divide into groups of two.&n= bsp; Each group will be given a set of tiles. The teacher will give the class a problem and the groups will work them with their tiles. Each group will rotate and take a = turn showing the class on the overhead. Then the groups will go to the computer lab. They will open a blank Paint document. They will sketch one problem on the computer and print it to be laminated and displayed.
